The Hell Feldfernschreiber is "the" classical Hellschreiber, also known as Siemens-Halkse model T typ 58. But there have been Hellschreibers before and after the trusty old Feld-Hell. We could broadly categorize the Hellschreibers used by radio amateurs as follows:

bullet

Classical: "Feld-Hell", Hell 72b/c "GL", "Hell 80" – mechanical machines. They roughly cover the periods of the mid-1930s-40s, 1950s-70s, and 1965-70s, respectively.

bullet

Modern "software" variants: FSK, PSK, FM, Duplo, C/MT, S/MT, Slowfeld. These modes primarily came about during the 1990s, when digital signal processing became mainstream and could be implemented on PCs. These modes where developed or invented by radio amateurs.

There are two more categories that I'd like to cover here:

bullet

Other Hellschreibers: there is a number of Hellschreibers from Hell/Siemens-Halske, before and after the Hell Feldfernschreiber, other than the ones listed above that are used by radio amateurs. This includes printer-only models, and the ZETFAX machines with optical-scanning. The are described on the Other Siemens Hellschreibers page.

bullet

Hellschreibers from other manufacturers: these are printers and senders/printers that use the Hellschreiber principles, but are not designed and built by Hell/Siemens-Halske.  Examples are the Teletype Model 17, the EMA Hell-Printer Type 125, and the US-military copy of the Hell-ZETFAX.

* to put the 1937 price level in perspective: the ubiquitous VW "beetle", designed by Ferdinand Porsche, sold for under 1000 Reichsmark around that time. That represented about 35 weeks' wages for an average factory worker. The average month's pay for a young "party" bureaucrat was about twice as high, and big-city teachers made something half way between the two. For the more fortunate, the 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster could be had for a mere 22000 Reichsmark (i.e., the price of 22 VW "Beetle").
