BERNHARD INSTALLATION BE-1 AT FAVIÈRES (France, dept. 28)

This Bernhard site is located on a plateau at a height of about 240 m ASL (see this interactive topographic map with Be-marker). The nearest large(r) city is Chartres, located some 20 km to the southeast. Down-town Paris lies 88 km to the northeast. Nearby Luftwaffe airfields were Chartres, Dreux (22 km to the northeast), and Châteaudun (54 km to the south). The station is also mentioned in §22 of ref. 6A.

According to the Ln-map of 24 June 1944 (see Fig. 27, ref. 210X), this is Bernhard station Be-1. It is hand-marked as "destroyed". Per ref. 89, the Be-1 "radar" and associated AA-guns ("FLAK") were attacked by P-38s of the USAF 401^st Fighter Squadron, on 13 August 1944.

The dismantling of Be-1 was ordered on 22 June 1944 (ref. 179).

The satellite image above clearly shows a fenced-in area with a cluster of buildings - and the Bernhard ring (at the yellow arrow). This is the Centre Spécialisé des Télécommunications et de l'Informatique (C.S.T.E.I), a satellite and HF radio communications center of the French army. The 2006 C.S.T.E.I. brochure of the French army (ref. 113) calls it a German "radar", and states that it dates back to 1942 - which is consistent with the low "Be" station number.
