BERNHARD INSTALLATION BE-12 AT NEVID (PLZEŇ / PILSEN, Czech Republic)

Map

The Be-12 station is located some 200 meters to the west of the village of Nevid, in what is now the Czech Republic. It is near the highest point in the area (527 m ASL) - the Brdy hills. Nearby villages are Rokyvá (Rokizan) and Mirošv. This station was constructed in 1943. The operating crew was housed in nearby wooden barracks. A local company, "Mandaus, Ing. Švajcr a spol." (Engineer Švajcr Mandaus & Co.) from Pilsen/Plzeň probably did the construction of the concrete ring and nearby buildings.

This site is often referred to as Pilsen (home of the famous Pilsner Urquell beer), which actually lies 16 km (10 mi) to the northwest. Pilsen got its Czech name "Plzeň", after the war, when the German population (Südeten-Deutschen) was driven out of the area. There was an aerodrome at Brünn (post-war name: Bory), on the southeast side of Pilsen. It became a Luftwaffe airfield when Germany annexed major parts of Czechoslovakia. It was home to several squadrons ("Jagdgeschwader" and "Kampfgeschwader"), a pilot training school, and "Flughafen-Bereichs-Kommando Brünn". These days, nothing remains of the aerodrome. Other airfields in the Flughafenbereich Pilsen were Budweis (České Budějovice, also famous for its beer - much better than its unoriginal US namesake), Prag-Gbell (Kbely), Prag-Rusin (Ruzyně), Königsgrätz (Hradec Králové), and Pardubitz (Pardubice). Flughafenbereich Brünn included the Olmütz (Olomouc) airfield. During the German occupation, the Škoda factories at Pilsen-Doudlevce and nearby Rokycany produced tanks, guns, shells, and shell cases. In the right-hand photo above, note the many tacks in the ceiling for attaching cables/wires; the octagonal mounting plate has been removed.

Ca. august of 2015, the land owner decided to destroy the round building, and build something like horse carousel on the ring:
